City of Fantasies, Fortunes, and Flames
City of Fantasies, Fortunes, and Flames is a mixed-media work that evokes the monumentality of palms that dot the city grid. As seen in generic tourist postcards, the palms are pictured against a sunset background. However, what is seen as idyllic is actually dystopic: In reality, the palm trees are engulfed in sunset-colored flames from the wildfires that ravaged California the same year the piece was made.
