The craft of handweaving a lambat (cast net) would have been passed down from generation to generation to me if not for my family’s migration away from the motherland: Economic instability in the Philippines led my family to emigrate to the U.S. in the 1970s. This developed a rift between local culture/traditions and our lives in a new country. Being among the first to be born in the U.S., I want to trace back to the weaving and fishing craft of my grandfather as an attempt to regain my loss of connection to this tradition.
