Typhoon Survivors
Super Typhoon Yolanda, also known as Typhoon Haiyan, made landfall in the Philippines on November 7, 2013. It was one of the strongest, and arguably, the world’s hardest-hitting typhoon to make landfall on record. As a Category 5 typhoon, it caused flooding, rain, and road closures where I was working in Manila as an intern; but in the epicenter, in Eastern Samar in the Visayas region, thousands of people lost their lives, and millions of families were displaced.
In 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I revisited the stories I heard about Yolanda as well as my own memories of the typhoon to develop the video work, Typhoon Survivors. My process involved having conversations with Filipinos based in the Philippines who experienced Yolanda at/near the epicenter of the typhoon. I asked my interview subjects to share their insights on Yolanda 8 years after the typhoon hit.
